Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure while working in a dangerous asbestos environment or remaining for long periods of time in unsafe structures which contain the deadly material. The two kinds of mesothelioma cancer are pleural, affecting the outer lining of the lungs, and peritoneal, which affects the lining of the abdominal cavity. Both are deadly cancers and the survival rate for these patients is bleak. It will depend upon many things such as the stage of the cancer, success or failure of surgery and the overall health of the person seeking treatment as to how long they will live. A great number of medical professionals believe that one year is the average length of life for these patients.

Numerous asbestos laced materials continue to exist which are harmful to the environment and humans. Some items being manufactured and sold today continue to harbor this hazardous material, even though several bans have been placed on various products throughout the years. Government employees continue to be exposed when their employment requires contact with asbestos and its particles, although the federal government has regulated the amount of exposure for their employees in the workplace. Often county and state contractors or outside contractors perform abatement, demolition of buildings, and other dangerous exposure activities in completing the duties of their job. They are sometimes working for weeks in buildings full of items that contain the deadly substance.

Today, not nearly all of the lawsuits concerning mesothelioma have been filed and settlements wait their turn in court, while there will be more to come as a result of breathing in the fibers from asbestos. Many cases of mesothelioma will lie dormant and not show up for years. Other cases will appear in the future because some items containing asbestos are still on the market and they too, will not be diagnosed for several years. For these reasons, it is possible that the number of future cases will increase even though mediocre laws and bans have been enacted to prevent it.

A major issue with many mesothelioma settlements is the period of time it takes to reach an agreement. If mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure is proven, the family will likely at some time receive compensation. It is possible that the patient will not live long enough to collect any money. Mesothelioma settlement amounts are often slow in being awarded even with the retention of well-known mesothelioma lawyers who specialize in such cases. Litigation often holds up settlements for months as court dockets are filled with cases. It is however, necessary to point our that numerous cases have been settled and large settlement amounts awarded to patients and families of patients. One of the highest settlements awarded was $250 million. A limited number of litigants have been awarded over $30 million. These cases do not represent the norm but it is not uncommon for a typical settlement to be several million. A rather large portion of that payment will go to the mesothelioma lawyer or lawyers.

Currently, there is no cure for mesothelioma. The encouraging news is that several treatments are being used in an effort to find a cure. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, specialized types of surgeries, and experimental vaccines are being aggressively tested with the hope of saving thousands of mesothelioma victim’s lives. In the meantime, mesothelioma lawyers continue to fight for settlements for those whose lives have been devastated because of exposure to asbestos. It is recognized by most people that no settlement can never adequately compensate the victim and their families for injury to their health and life.
