The population was 110,257 at the 2000 census; a 2007 census estimate put the metropolitan area’s population at 256,494. It is the fourth largest city in the state. It is the larger principal city of the Lafayette-Acadiana, LA Combined Statistical Area, which, in 2007, had an estimated total population of 538,470.

The city was founded as Vermilionville in 1821 by a French-speaking Acadian named Jean Mouton. In 1884, it was renamed for General Lafayette, a French military hero who fought with and significantly aided the American Army during the American Revolutionary War.  The city’s economy was primarily based on agriculture until the 1940s, when the petroleum and natural gas industry became dominant.

Lafayette is the center of the Cajun culture in Louisiana and the US. Lafayette has a strong tourism industry because of the Cajun and Creole cultures of the surrounding region. The Cajun cuisine is one of the most distinctive cuisines in the US, and perhaps because of the Cajun reputation for good food, it has one of the highest numbers of restaurants per capita of any U.S. city.

Round Rock is a city located in Travis and Williamson Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. A part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area, its population was 61,136 at the 2000 census. The 2008 census estimate placed the population at 104,446.

In August 2008, Money Magazine named Round Rock as the 7th best American small city to live in. Money based this ranking on an estimated annual income of $85,809 per household, and job growth of 45.15% from 2000-2007. Round Rock was the only Texas city to make the Top 10. In a CNN article dated July 1, 2009, Round Rock was listed as the second fastest growing city in the country, with a population growth of 8.2% in the last year.

According to the 2008 ratings from the Texas Education Agency, the Round Rock Independent School District ranks among the best in the state. Of 42 schools within RRISD, 12 were rated exemplary and 11 are recognized. The majority of academic strengths are within the elementary schools, as Canyon Vista MS was the only non-primary school to receive an exemplary rating, and Westwood HS was the only non-primary school to receive the recognized rating. No RRISD schools received an academically unacceptable rating.

Round Rock is located on the prairie east of the Balcones Escarpment, and about a 20 minute drive north of Austin, or 45 minute drive during rush hour. Several toll roads now connect it with the greater Austin area, easing the traffic congestion somewhat.

Round Rock has been represented in the Texas House of Representatives since 2009 by Democratic member Diana Maldonado, a former Round Rock ISD school board member, although Round Rock is decidedly conservative both politically and culturally.

It is home to the nation’s oldest public art museum (Wadsworth Atheneum), the oldest public park (Bushnell Park), the oldest continuously published newspaper (The Hartford Courant), the second-oldest secondary school (Hartford Public), and until its recent closure, the sixth-oldest opera company in the nation (Connecticut Opera).

In 2004, the Hartford metropolitan area ranked second per capita for economic activity, behind San Francisco, California. Hartford is ranked 32nd of 318 metropolitan areas in total economic production and generates more economic activity than sixteen U.S. states.
